Denis Leary is a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated American actor, comedian, writer and director. He is known for his often angry comedic style. Leary displays an overt affinity for libertarianism. Leary started in career as a comedian in the notorious Boston comedy scene of the 1980s, where he hosted his own show at the underground club "Play It Again Sam". He ... wrote and appeared on a local comedy series, Lenny Clarke's Late Show, hosted by his friend Lenny Clarke. Leary and Clarke both spoke about their early affiliations and influences in the Boston comedy scene in the documentary film When Standup Stood Out.

Denis Leary Denis Leary is a stand-up comedian and actor. As a kid he wanted to play pro hockey, but lousy grades kept him off the high school team. His GPA didn't keep him out of Boston's Emerson College, though, where he co-founded the school's Comedy Workshop. After graduation he spent five years teaching at Emerson, doing stand-up on the side. As a struggling comedian, Leary became friends with Bill Hicks, a brilliantly acerbic and insightful comedian on the nightclub circuit.

[H]e broke a tree branch - now Denis Leary wants to break some bones. Leary was filming his new FX show about New York's Bravest, "Rescue Me," at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church the other day when a trucker on his set accidentally backed into a tree on East 3rd Street, breaking a branch. Neighbor John Penley, who says he takes care of the tree, complained to the mayor's film office, which set up a meeting with Penley and the location manager. "I met him and showed him the tree, and the truck driver called me a [bleeping] moron," Penley says. "I said something back and then Leary came up and started screaming at me and telling me to go [bleep] myself. I called the film office again, and someone from the Parks Department came down and took a picture of the tree and now they're gonna issue tickets to Leary's production company and the company that owns the truck . . . I just think he should have been a little conciliatory instead of calling me a [bleeping] moron and going off on me." When we called Leary for comment, he told his spokesman: "If the guy wants a real story for PAGE SIX, I'll kick [Penley's] a- up and down the street, if he wants."

No Cure for Cancer captured Denis Leary the phenomenon but Lock 'n Load captures Denis Leary the comedian, and it's a record that captures him at his best. Leary's relentless rants may seem like a gimmick to undiscerning ears, but they tend to obscure a viciously clever satirical wit. Few comedians during the '90s were as political or accurate as Leary -- in fact, his set pieces of the time often seemed more like bitterly funny social comedy than routines. Throughout Lock 'n Load, he takes on targets ranging from the Catholic Church and politicians to microbrews and Hanson, and mercilessly tears them down with his sharp, profane wit. It's an excellent display of his powers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Denis Leary Denis Leary was born to Irish immigrants in Worchester, Massachusetts, and grew up seeped in that magical, yet intangible "thing" known as the "Irish sense of humor." Leary went to Emerson College in Boston, where he became a member of Emerson's Comedy Workshop. Upon graduation, Leary got a job at the college, where he taught for five years while concurrently doing stand-up. Leary's big break came when MTV began featuring his signature rants as promos for their programming. The comedian's second, albeit accidental, break came in 1990. That year, he and his wife flew to London where he had a series of shows booked.

Denis Leary was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Irish Catholic immigrants John Leary (an auto mechanic) and Nora (a maid); Leary holds both Irish and American citizenship. He graduated from Saint Peter-Marian High School in Worcester. Through marriage, Leary is a distant cousin of talk show host Conan O'Brien,[1] and has jokingly said on Late Night with Conan O'Brien that "All Irish people are related." His name is often misspelled as "Dennis", instead of "Denis."
