Dementia can affect younger people; currently over 9 600 Australians under the age of 65 have early onset dementia Dementia may be caused by up to 100 different diseases, and there are many other diseases that may have symptoms similar to dementia. Thus, if you have symptoms that are similar to dementia, it is important to be examined properly. It is important to remember that everyone with dementia can be treated, although few can be cured.

SPARTA, N.J., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (http://www.nccdp.org) completed training with the Sparta, NJ Police Department in the area of Alzheimer's and Dementia Care. The course was 7 hours and the entire police force completed the training conducted over a two-day period. The NCCDP seminar included: recognizing abuse and neglect in the home, communication (live their truth), paranoia, hallucinations, aggressive behaviors, catastrophic reactions, wandering, elopement, hoarding, symptoms of dementia, care giver issues, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, feelings, medications, depression, sexuality and intimacy issues, cultural diversity, nutrition, activities, pain, environment, spirituality and end of life issues.

Dementia is a descriptive name for the group of symptoms and signs seen in these conditions. General medical nursing and social care is the same for "dementia" whatever the underlying cause. Description of the different types is beyond the scope of this book. Differential diagnosis between even the three most common types: Alzheimers disease, Lewy Body disease and multi infarct dementia is difficult for the psychogeriatrician or neurologist without highly specialised and expensive investigations. With the likelihood of specific drug treatment for specific types of dementia being licensed for use in the reasonably near future, recognition of early cognitive impairment and referral to the appropriate specialised centres for accurate and early diagnosis will become vital if the patient is to obtain full benefit from such treatments. Until such drugs are available, the main role of the GP is to exclude the few treatable causes of dementia-like symptoms eg thyroid disease, space occupying lesions; and to identify and treat any comorbid conditions which are worsening the dementia eg depression, anaemia, infections, constipation.
