Delaware: Delaware River
built 202 days ago
Delaware is not a Native American name. Exploring the Atlantic coast north of Jamestown in 1610, Captain Samuel Argall discovered a large bay which he named in honor of Sir Thomas West, Third Lord de la Warr and the first governor of the Virginia. Apparently, Governor West was unimpressed with this honor and returned to England without ever bothering to gaze upon his namesake. However, the name stuck. English colonists later used Delaware for the bay, the river and the native peoples who lived there. The Delaware called themselves Lenape translated either as "original people" or "true men." The Swedish form was Renape.

Delaware is on a level plain; the highest elevation, located at Ebright Azimuth, near Concord High School, Wilmington, does not even rise 450 feet above sea level. The northern part is associated with the Appalachian Piedmont and is full of hills with rolling surfaces. South of Newark and Wilmington, the state follows the Atlantic Coastal Plain with flat, sandy, and, in some parts, swampy ground. A ridge about 75 to 80 feet in altitude extends along the western boundary of the state and is the drainage divide between the two major water bodies of the Delaware River and several streams falling into Chesapeake Bay in the west.
In both the south and the north of Delaware, you'll find fantastic seafood, fascinating historic sites and architectural curiosities, plus waterfalls, canals, and rivers flowing into the ocean. You'll ... find another of Delaware's chief selling points for tourists: tax-free shopping.

"Increasing the recreational potential of the Delaware River is the focus of the Marcus Hook Marina master plan," Borough Manager Bruce Dorbian said. "The project builds upon the phased growth of the borough's riverfront park and neighborhood development activities, as well as the area's rich history. The project provides a close-to-home recreational entry to the river for boaters and fishermen."
