Del Amitri

Formerly a leading member of the '80s pop band Del Amitri, Scottish singer and songwriter Justin Currie has used his style and wit to release his debut solo album What Is Love For. After six albums and great success with Del Amitri, Currie participated in a variety of other acts including the band Button Up, which performed soul and jazz covers on a short tour of Scotland. In 2004, he along with Kevin and Jim McDermott released A Terrible Beauty, a comedy rock album.

After four years in hibernation, Del Amitri emerged as a gang of mature pop stars. Dropping their edgy quirkiness, Justin Currie and the boys explored their Scottish folk roots, refashioned their sound, and quickly established themselves as a rock band with heart. Still retaining a bit of the Elvis Costello musical heritage, Del Amitri added a dose of Elvis Presley (check out Currie's sideburns!) and a healthy chunk of Van Morrison. This time, the critics flocked in droves, and the public started to take notice. Highlights include "Nothing Ever Happens," "Stone Cold Sober," and "Kiss This Thing Goodbye." ~ Steven "Spaz" Schnee, All Music Guide

Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Formed in Scotland in 1982 by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Justin Currie and longtime guitarist and collaborator Ian Harvie, the duo released Sense Sickness on a small Glasgow indie label the following year. Through heavy touring and positive word of mouth, the band -- which now included drummer Paul Tyagi and guitar player Bryan Tolland -- managed to impress the suits at Chrysalis Records enough to offer the fledgling group a recording contract. Their Hugh Jones-produced self-titled major-label debut was released in 1985 amidst a tidal wave of hype, but their signature blend of new wave and country-folk isolated audiences and critics alike, resulting in their inevitable departure from the Chrysalis family.

Del Amitri grabbed most of their fans with their infectious pop melodies and likable, clever lyrics – and this would be nearly the same description of The Push Stars. With songs like “Claire,” “Lucky Sevens” and “Paint The Town,” it’s impossible to dislike the music. This is the stuff of soundtracks, the song playing in the bar during that magically relationship moment, the tune that you and your friends heard while having the time of your life. Songs that could easily be burned into your memories forever.

"I had a few songs I had written that I wanted to release, but they didn't sound like Del Amitri," he said. "So the obvious thing to do was to put them out on a record under my own name."
