Deforestation: Rates
built 645 days ago
This is the second fall in the deforestation rate since March 2004, when the Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation in Amazônia (PPCDA) was launched by president Lula. This integrated plan combines different technologies (earth monitoring), policies and enforcement instruments. The accounting is a undertaken in an inter-ministerial manner, with 13 ministries cooperating.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (May 10, 2007) – Slowing tropical deforestation is one of the most important ways to avert severe climate change, according to a new study published today in the journal Science. An international team of 11 top forest and climate researchers found that cutting deforestation rates in half by mid-century would amount to 12 percent of the emissions reductions needed to keep concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere at relatively safe levels.

The goal of this paper is to discover the impact of deforestation on the desiccation of China's north and northwest. The study starts with a brief discussion of the long-term impact of deforestation on precipitation. It continues with a rough estimate of China's forest cover and rate of deforestation, followed by an evaluation of the impact of deforestation on China's water resources, environment and economy. The paper concludes with a number of recommendations for afforestation.

From 2002 to 2006, the conserved land in the Amazon Rainforest has almost tripled and deforestation rates have dropped up to 60%. About 1,000,000 square kilometres (250,000,000 acres) have been put onto some sort of conservation, which adds up to a current amount of 1,730,000 square kilometres (430,000,000 acres). [33]

Average annual rates of deforestation estimated for DRC (0.4% over the period 1984-98) are lower than those published by FAO (0.6% over the period 1981-90). Though comparison of these estimates is difficult because the methods and data sets used are different, DRC appears subject to relatively low rates of deforestation (0.4% on average) relative to the rest of tropical Africa (Ivory coast 1%, Ghana 1.3%, Sierra Leone 0.6%, Liberia 0.5%) (Fig.1). However, it has been suggested that deforestation rates in West Africa have been overestimated in the past.

In the 'Federal Conservation Units' ('unidades de conservação' - UCs), the variation in the fall of the deforestation rate was 56%. In 2005, the total of deforested area was in 689 square kilometres; in 2006, the total deforested area in the UCs was 306 square kilometres.
