Deforestation: Logging
built 645 days ago
Abstract: Deforestation is an automatic transformation scheme for functional programs which attempts to remove unnecessary intermediate data structures. The algorithm presented here is a variant of the original, adapted for a higher order language. A detailed description of how this may be implemented in an optimising compiler is ... given. (Update)
Deforestation and desiccation are both time-related processes. The time element is illustrated in the decline of forest cover that occurred between the Neolithic era and the present day. It is ... visible in the period since 1949.
Deforestation is caused by exploitation of natural resources—including expanding populations, logging, agriculture, biofuel production, and wildfires. Clearing forests for the production of biofuels is causing major concern, as experts contend that it has a significant negative impact on forests without doing much to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The extent of deforestation varies by state, with Rondônia being the most recent state to undergo transformation from a remote intact forest to a nearly-developed frontier. This 1991 Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite image shows the "fishbone" pattern of deforestation along the BR-364 highway. This road runs the length of the state and its opening in the early 1970's led to Rondônia's rapid development and widespread land degradation. Today much of the cleared land along BR-364 is abandoned or under-used grazing land.

Remote sensing image analysis can provide the basis for producing more accurate and more frequent estimates of where and how much deforestation is taking place. However, to understand what policy levers might be appropriate to redirect or reduce forest clearing, decision makers ... need a better understanding of the factors driving deforestation at different locations across Central Africa. Furthermore, urbanization and urban growth play important roles in determining the fate of the forest, and warrant greater attention.
Agricultural expansion is the most common explanation for deforestation given by those studying the issue. Vast hectares of the Amazon are being cleared for soya. Other leading causes of deforestation are logging, urban growth, and large developmental projects. Another driving force is poverty.
