Deforestation: Carbon
built 645 days ago
Deforestation, primarily in tropical forests, is responsible for about 20 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions. This is occurring where forests are permanently cleared and converted to agriculture and urban settlement.
Boreal forests are ... threatened by large scale deforestation, primarily by industrial logging. These forests are found mainly in Russia, Canada, Alaska and to a lesser extent northern Europe. Once thought to be 'uneconomic' for logging, high demand for wood is now enticing logging companies into the boreal forest, with grave consequences for global warming, since boreal forests hold a huge amount of carbon.

Today tropical deforestation accounts for approximately 20% of total global emissions of carbon dioxide (3.8 B tons per year), almost twice as much as does global road transportation. Since the 1950’s, 5% of tropical forests have been lost per decade. In just the past five years, over 50 million hectares of tropical forest (about the size of France) have been lost.
