The racing yacht Defender was created by America's renowned designer Nat Herreshoff in 1895 to meet the America's Cup challenge of an Irish aristocrat, Lord Dunraven. The challenger was Valkyrie III, built in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the latest of a series of sleek, fast boats with a great press of sail which Lord Dunraven had commissioned to win the Cup for Great Britain. Defender measured just under 90 feet at the waterline and displaced just under 100 tons. Contributing to her speed was an exceptionally smooth hull made of a special heat-rolled bronze. Her underside was cut away drastically to reduce total surface area in contact with the water and increase speed.

It's interesting to note that when the now-legendary shoot-em-up was first shown at a 1981 Chicago arcade machine trade show, it was deemed to be a flop due to its high level of difficulty. Arcade industry insiders confidently predicted that both Defender and Pac-Man would be commercial flops and that Namco's Rally X would be the next major arcade success.

The TIE Defender's most extensive use during the Galactic Civil War occurred when Zaarin attempted a coup against Emperor Palpatine. While Darth Vader led the search for the forces of the treacherous Admiral Harkov, Zaarin's forces attacked Vader's ship, the Star Destroyer Garrett. Though the Garrett survived it had sustained damage that would prevent Vader from reaching Coruscant in time to warn the Emperor. Fortunately, the Garrett was one of the few ships to be carrying TIE Defenders, the Dark Lord of the Sith having brought them aboard in the hope of conducting operational trials. Vader selected five ace pilots, including Maarek Stele, to accompany him to Coruscant in the new starfighter.[6]
