Declaration of Independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (1983) - The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was proclaimed in northern Cyprus in 1983. The area had been occupied by Turkish forces since a Turkish invasion in 1974. The state has only received international recognition from Turkey and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

A pro-life group joined with Life and Liberty Ministries to hold signs with pictures of aborted babies, while they distributed literature with pictures on the cover of the founding fathers and excerpts from the Declaration of Independence. "These are not pretty pictures, but just because it goes on in secret doesn't mean that we can't show it to the public," said William Wegert, pastor of Amherst Covenant Church. "If we can stop one person from murdering their child, then it has been worthwhile."

August 2 - The engrossed copy of the Declaration of Independence was signed by most of the delegates. Elbridge Gerry, Oliver Wolcott, Lewis Morris, Thomas McKean, and Matthew Thornton all signed on a later date.
