When “flying” a Decca Tree (or any) microphone array, it is of utmost importance to be absolutely certain that it is rigged securely so that it cannot fall and injure anyone below. While it is tempting to suspend it from the individual microphone cables, this is not recommended unless they are strong and capable of handling the weight of the array without damage to either the internal conductors or the shield.

Decca has for years caused great confusion to both collectors and dealers alike. The reason is that the label rarely deleted LPs unlike its competitors, and to add to the confusion the dates for label changes are not very clear.

John Culshaw, who joined Decca in 1946 in a junior post, rapidly became a senior producer of classical recordings. He revolutionised recording – of opera, in particular. Hitherto, the practice had been to put microphones in front of the performers and simply record what they performed. Culshaw was determined to make recordings that would be ‘a theatre of the mind’, making the listener’s experience at home not second best to being in the opera house, but a wholly different experience. To that end he got the singers to move about in the studio as they would onstage, used discreet sound effects and different acoustics, and recorded in long continuous takes. His skill, coupled with the incomparable Decca engineering, took Decca into the first flight of recording companies.

This organization acted on behalf of the Indonesian Government for the supply of a Decca chain to be installed on the Sumatra coastline in the central area of the Malacca Straits. It was to be called the Dumai Chain.

Delrac Decca Long Range Area Coverage - only existed as a proposal although it was patented. The proposal was to set up VLF Stations operating in the 10kHz band where the ionosphere acts like a waveguide to provide a global navigation system. See the Jerry Proc (VE3FAB) Delrac Page for a description.
