The first blacksmith in Decatur was George Irwin, and the first shopkeeper, John Chase. The first physician was Dr. Thomas Whitacre. The first postmaster was Robert Percival, appointed in 1857. Another early settler was the Honorable Frank Welch who located in Decatur in 1857. He was later elected to Congress from Nebraska. The history of Decatur would not be complete without mentioning Hamilton and Fontenelle.

The visit by the Falcons players to the Atlanta VA Medical Center, 1670 Clairmont Road, NE, Decatur, Ga., is part of the team's observance of Veterans Day. The Atlanta Falcons join other NFL teams, Major and Minor League Baseball players, NASCAR drivers, country music singers and others participating in the DAV Celebrity Entertainment program. They are generously donating their time to remember the men and women who sacrificed greatly in defense of liberty.

Specialists in the production of carbon and alloy steel products, Nucor Steel Decatur wanted to improve business agility and deliver outstanding customer service with automated, repeatable processes. Through its use of Oracle BPEL Process Manager, Nucor Steel Decatur integrated its IFS Application with Microsoft's Great Plains Financials. Within the SOA environment, the system uses Web services to send XML-based vouchers from IFS to Great Plains. Once the vouchers are transmitted to Great Plains, the business application automatically generates an invoice. The automated process has improved customer service and streamlined the company's order-to- cash cycle.

The City of Decatur recently received almost $300,000 in payments from the local cable company to help maintain local cable service and provide residents better access to government and the community. City staff in recent months successfully negotiated a new cable franchise agreement with cable provider Comcast after years of delay from Insight, the citys former provider. Terms of the agreement call for Comcast to pay about $750,000 over the next 10 years to fund public programming in addition to its regular access fee.

Decatur is well known for its industrial, agricultural processing, and manufacturing strengths, with vast production facilities for Caterpillar Inc., Archer Daniels Midland, Mueller Co., and Tate & Lyle (previously A. E. Staley). The corporate world headquarters for ADM, the leading agricultural processor and ethanol producer is in Decatur. A large former Firestone factory is currently being used as storage space for Caterpillar Inc..
