Debussy: Terms
built 624 days ago
Debussy himself attempted to distance himself from the term as seen in the primary opening quotation. Yet at the core of Debussy's art and ideals, is an indubitable basis of impressionism, heavily influencedby impressionist artists and writers of his time.

Claude Debussy's interest in the arts was focused particularly on the painters of the Impressionist school headed by Claude Monet. Critics hailed Debussy as a "French musical impressionist" in comparing his music with the impressionist painters Monet, Renoir and Pisarro, although he preferred the term 'Symbolism' to 'Impressionism.'
Debussy Debussy is inextricably tied in the public mind with Impressionism, but like many of the painters, he disliked the term and would be more accurately described as a Symbolist. He was more drawn to the atmospheric canvasses of Turner and Whistler than those of Monet and his circle, and in literature his affinities were Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Verlaine and Edgar Allen Poe.
