Debbie Does Dallas

Debbie Does Dallas is one of the most iconic adult films ever made with its catchy title and its seductive poster art. When this film was released nearly thirty years ago in 1978 adult cinema was still illegal and operated underground for fear of being arrested. The movie is far from perfect and most of its legend has come about because of the notoriety the film has garnered through the years. The producers were sued by the Dallas Cowboys and the star of the Bambi Woods making her film debut would disappear into oblivion a few years later.

Told through outrageous musical numbers, Debbie Does Dallas is a modern morality tale disguised as the coming-of-age story of all-American sweetheart Debbie Benton. Debbie is captain of her high-school cheerleading team, but she dreams of making it to the big time by becoming a Texas Cowgirl Cheerleader. Unfortunately, the only thing that stands between her and the realization of her dream is bus fare to the big city. Debbie enlists her teammates to try their hands at "little favors" performed with enthusiasm by "good girls." Will it be enough for Debbie to realize her dream and make it all the way to Dallas?

When the original Debbie Does Dallas came out in 1978, the adult film industry was entirely different than it is today. For one thing, back then naked people didn’t just stream onto your computer or cell phone with the push of a button – partly because the technology wasn’t there yet, and partly because pornography was still highly illegal in most of the good ol’ U S of A. In fact, as recently as 1986 the original Debbie was considered to be obscene material, subject to seizure by the State Gestapo Police. And that wasn’t in the backwoods of Tennessee either – that was in New York.

Rarely Done Productions' mounting of "Debbie Does Dallas- The Musical", directed by Jay Falzone, represents another step by this relatively new Syracuse theater company to attempt to push the local theater scene's envelope along with a few hot buttons. Since its inception, local heads have been turned, usually in the direction of chancy or different or even "cutting edge" stage fare, and that's great for local theater goers who welcome the challenge or who might tire of a lot of the same old same olds.

The original print of Debbie Does Dallas was stolen this morning from the warehouse where it was kept in Canada. Local authorities say no trace evidence has been found at this time but they are very optimistic that they will catch the culprit. A fortune telling gypsy has been brought in to tell the future and make predictions to the whereabouts of the movie print. No luck yet but the gypsy will be working for the next few days in junction with the mounted police sketch artist to identify the thief. The Academy of Nude Films of Times Past (ANFTP) is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the cat-burglar, and the chairman of ANFTP says they will not sleep until that print is back in its rightful place in the warehouse.

In 2001, "Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical" was created by Susan L. Schwartz for the New York Fringe Festival. In 2002 it was made into an Off-Broadway musical comedy of the same name. Unlike the original movie, the musical did not contain any actual sex or nudity, which caused some disappointment among people, as false hype had been made and the musical's producers did nothing to dismiss it. Since then, the show has been performed around the world, often with racier direction and more explicit choreography. The story, dialogue and characters are fairly faithful to the original film, with musical numbers standing in for sex scenes or added for comic effect.
