In the Revenge of the Sith DVD commentary, Lucas made an off-hand comment that the Death Star seen at the end was the first Death Star. He explained this was due to "union disputes and supply problems." This has been conflicted by other sources in the Star Wars canon, including Jedi Search and Champions of the Force. These sources explain that what is seen in Revenge of the Sith is a prototype Death Star to the one in A New Hope. This was retconned in The New Essential Chronology, where it is stated that the latter was a testbed prototype for the superlaser to be installed on the former. However, the Death Star shown at the end of Revenge of the Sith is in fact the first Death Star.

Death is an anthropomorphic personification of the event of life discontinuance. Death is ... God's personal way of telling you "you are wanted." However, nobody ever remembers it, unless your death was really cool, and if someone remembers the words, they cannot spell them. Dying is something you do in Las Vegas while at the same time losing your money. It involves the manipulation of small white plastic cubes with moving pictures on them. Though you may not know it, death is the cure for life.

From 1984 to 1987, the band underwent a number of lineup changes because Schuldiner wasn't getting along with his old bandmates, although Death kept a steady stream of demo tapes coming out. One of these demo tapes was Mutilation, recorded while Chuck briefly lived in Toronto, Canada, where he had access to a decent studio. It was there he first met bassist Steve DiGiorgio, who would become a close friend of his, and would later be featured on two Death records. A small record label (Combat Records) eventually got hold of Mutilation, and offered Schuldiner a deal. He eagerly accepted, and in March 1987, Death released its first album, Scream Bloody Gore. SBG featured a two-man lineup consisting of Chuck Schuldiner on guitars, vocal and bass and Chris Reifert on drums and a crude, enormously heavy sound.

Death Valley is generally sunny, dry, and clear throughout the year. The winters, November through March, are mild with occasional winter storms, but summers are extremely hot and dry. The Death Star was born in the mind of Raith Sienar, who had conceived of it as an Expeditionary Battle Planetoid. He shared his idea with his friend Captain Wilhuff Tarkin, who presented it to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Palpatine, as Sith Lord Darth Sidious, gave the designs to his apprentice, Separatist leader Count Dooku. Dooku then presented the designs to Geonosian Industries for further technical modifications.
