Pittsburgh, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Children with even profound deafness can learn to listen and talk as well as their hearing peers, thanks to advances in technology and education. For nearly 25 years, CEID has worked with children whose deafness was unnecessarily diagnosed late. Now, CEID has the opportunity to take a lead in assuring that every child in our community receives the screening and support to allow for the "right beginning." It's not only the right thing to do, but ... finally the "right" of every newborn and his or her family. This is a very exciting time in California and universal newborn hearing screening represents a significant opportunity to intervene early, save millions of dollars and limit, even reverse, the negative effects of undiagnosed newborn deafness.
