Between Israel and Jordan lies the Dead Sea, a salt lake located on the lowest point of the Earth's surface. Its basin lies some 1,300 feet (400 meters) below sea level, making it the lowest body of water in the world. The lake is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) long and 11 miles (18 kilometers) wide. Its surface area is about 394 square miles (1,020 square kilometers).

The Dead Sea is located in Israel and Jordan, about 15 miles east of Jerusalem. It is extremely deep (averaging about 1,000 feet), salty (some parts containing the highest amount of salts possible), and the lowest body of water in the world. The Dead Sea is supplied by a number of smaller streams, springs, and the Jordan River.

Almost 2,000 years ago leather scrolls were sealed in earthenware jars and hidden deep inside caves that line the Dead Sea. Since the discovery of the scrolls in 1947, researchers from around the world have spent years trying to piece the scrolls together and learn what they say and who wrote them.
