Dead Rising

Marketing efforts for the game would have you believe that Dead Rising is all about killing endless droves of zombies in wacky fun ways. Fortunately, the game is that and more. As soon as the game begins, the clock starts ticking, and 72 hours is all you get to uncover the conspiracy behind the zombie outbreak. Sure, you are free to spend the next three days running down zombies with a lawnmower, but no one's ever won a Pulitzer Prize just doing that. In order to uncover the truth, Frank has to complete a linear series of missions, referred to as ‘cases'. Each case begins at a given time at a certain place in the mall, and it is up to you to get there before time runs out.
Dead Rising isn't the best looking game on the 360, but it certainly comes close. Character models are superbly rendered, displaying details such as clavicle bones and subtle clothing shifts with movement that is rarely seen until now. Most of the characters have superbly-modeled faces as well that portray emotions convincingly. Frank is especially impressive looking as his face is flawed in that rugged way with an oddly-shaped nose and other imperfections. By detailing such imperfections and realistic textures, Capcom has crafted quite a compelling cast. Even better than the character models are the zombies and their animations.

Dead Rising almost has an RPG type feel to it, as Frank begins to level up for completing tasks, he begins to gain new skills and his character stats begin to improve. In the beginning of the game, all Frank can do is swing away with weapons and throw a punch while carrying a few items. By the meat and potatoes part of the game, he is performing judo moves on the undead while his health meter is significantly increased and ability to carry more weapons is evident. Good thing too, since the zombies seem to get tougher as night falls, anything to help you and Frank out is a blessing.
Dead Rising has an unusual save system: only one game-in-progress can be saved per memory device per Xbox 360 profile. In these cases, Dead Rising allows players to save their current level and status and restart the game from the beginning as a more powerful player. The system is a deliberate game mechanic, borrowed from one of Capcom's RPGs Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter; the two games share some development team members.[11]
While Dead Rising does allow for exploration and wandering about the mall aimlessly, it often forces players into a structured gameplay experience with scheduled story missions and the 72-hour timeframe. Missions must be started and completed within a specific window if Frank is to uncover facts of this event and put together the plot. If you complete a line of missions with a couple hours to spare you have time to wander about looking for survivors and killing zombies. As the hours pass by, locations for survivors will be radioed to you and labeled on your map. Most times, these people are quite a ways away from each other, making it impossible to rescue everyone that you hear about. Time management is critical as wandering out for survivors too close to mission time and failing to return in time can force you to reload from the last save.

Dead Rising is notable for the hundreds of weapons that mostly do the same thing that the player can find in the mall and use against the zombies. There are over 250 items that can be used as weapons, including chainsaws, baseball bats, axes, katanas, sledgehammers, mall furniture, potted plants, frying pans, guitars, toy swords, and water guns. [6][3] Weapons will break down or run out of ammo with use, often to be thrown away, but certain weapons will gain new properties. For example, a push broom can break in two, leaving the wooden staff to be used as a spear; or a mannequin, which breaks into five usable parts, such as the arms, legs, or torso. Others can be changed by the environment, such as the frying pan, which can be heated on a stove to both increase damage and gain access to a special move. The player can ... lift larger items like benches or cash registers that can be used to smash foes or be thrown at them.
