Demand for durable goods fell back in January after a burst of orders in December, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday, another sign that the economy is slowing. New orders for durable goods fell 5.3% in January, close to the 5.1% drop anticipated by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. December's gains were revised lower to 4.4% from 5% previously reported. Much of the decline in January was due to the unwinding of the flood of orders for aircraft in December. The timing of Wal-Mart's news couldn't have been worse, coming just after most consumers started holiday shopping. While many retailers had a strong Thanksgiving weekend, Wal-Mart warned Saturday that its November sales would be weaker than expected.
