David Ricardo was born into an Iberian Jewish family (from Portugal), on 18th April 1722, the third of seventeen children! The family had emigrated from Holland to London just prior to his birth. At the age of fourteen, after some brief schooling, David joined his father at the London Stock Exchange. He quickly acquired a knack for the market, a skill that in time would earn him a fortune in excess of £50million in real terms!

Ricardo was born on 19 April 1772 in London. He was the third son of a Dutch Jew who had made a fortune on the London Stock Exchange. When he was 14, Ricardo joined his father's business and showed a good grasp of economic affairs. In 1793 he married a Quaker called Priscilla Anne Wilkinson and converted to Christianity, becoming a Unitarian. This caused a breach with his father and meant that Ricardo had to establish his own business. He continued as a member of the stock exchange, where his ability won him the support of an eminent banking house.

David was home schooled to follow in his father's career; his early education included a two-year spell in Amsterdam. He was essentially self-educated and later complained bitterly of his lack of a sustained, formal education, especially in the art of writing. At fourteen David started working in his father's office at the London stock exchange, later becoming a member of the exchange.

Ricardo didn't just crunch numbers. He ... loved to be a part of 'the game.' His father was a stockbroker, and by age 14 Ricardo worked with his father at the London Stock Exchange. In time, Ricardo was trading for his own account and making a market as well (kind of like a floor trader today).
