David Letterman: Night

David Letterman made fun of President Bush via video at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton. He listed off his top 10 George W. moments. It’s pretty funny.

Letterman began his career as a radio talk show host and on Indianapolis television station WLWI (now called WTHR) as a local anchor and weatherman. He received recognition for his unpredictable on-air behavior, which included erasing state borders from the weather map and predicting hail stones "the size of canned hams" (because this upset his bosses, to this day he occasionally gives out canned hams on his show). One night he reportedly upset his bosses when he congratulated a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane. He ... hosted a talk show which aired early on Saturday mornings called "Clover Power" in which he interviewed 4-H members about their projects.

Letterman is the first of the late night talk show hosts to return to the air after the World Trade Center attacks. Does not deliver opening monologue or top ten list. Sings "America the Beautiful" with Dan Rather and Regis Philbin.

Bill O’Reilly took on David Letterman last night. Advantage: O’Reilly. The Political Teen has video. Letterman recycled chickenhawk arguments, muttered “Honest to Christ!” when O’Reilly refused to back down from his criticism of Cindy Sheehan, and attacked O’Reilly’s show despite admitting he doesn’t watch it. Some highlights:

Jacques Steinberg and Bill Cater report that David Letterman’s return to late-night television tonight features a greeting from Hillary Rodham Clinton. After the taping of the show was concluded, the show’s producers inserted a one-line joke to precede the host’s entrance — delivered not by Mr. Letterman but by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, via satellite from Iowa, on the eve of the state’s presidential caucuses.
