On CBS, Letterman's popularity grew. He kept much of his off-beat comic style, yet softened some of his angry edge and irreverence. Some commentators have attributed the changes to a desire--on his part and the network's--to broaden his audience in the earlier time slot. By the mid-1990s David Letterman was a mainstream favorite among a mostly young audience. Prior to week-day taping sessions, sidewalks outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, venue for the new show, were the site of long stand-by lines of those hoping for seats inside the already packed house. Letterman's persona was clearly a fitting celebrity for a culture impressed with one individual's ability to capture so much popular attention.

In related news, Missy Chase Lapine eventually filed a very well-deserved lawsuit against both the Seinfelds – Jessica for plagiarizing the books, and Jerry for slandering her on Letterman – which the Seinfelds recently tried to have thrown out. Jerry claims that he was exaggerating for comedic effect – and while that was possible true, Lapine had done absolutely nothing to deserve being the victim of his barbs. She had at that point been silent while Jessica Seinfeld stole her ideas and made money off them! Interestingly, Jessica Seinfeld has the same literary agent - Jennifer Rudolph Walsh – as another plagiarizing author, Kaavya Viswanathan. Kind of makes you wonder.

In March 2002, as Letterman's contract with CBS neared expiration, ABC expressed the intention to offer Letterman the time slot for long-running news program Nightline with Ted Koppel, citing more desirable viewer demographics. This caused a minor flap that ended when Letterman re-signed with CBS. Letterman addressed his decision to re-sign on the air, stating that he was content at CBS and that he had great respect for Koppel.
20060503cruiseletterman.jpg On Friday, socialite ex-con Paris Hilton sat down with David Letterman on "The Late Show." Paris wanted to promote her clothing line, her movie, and her perfume, but there was only one thing Letterman was interested in discussing: her life behind bars. As far as PR rehabilitations go, this was not at all like the smooth move that publicist Dan Klores pulled off when he set up Paris to go on "Saturday Night Live" to defuse the news of her sex tape.
