David Letterman: Late Show With David Letterman
built 177 days ago
CBS' Late Show With David Letterman will return to air tonight (Jan. 2) with guests Robin Williams and music act Shooter Jennings. Letterman, along with all other late-night shows, has been in reruns since the writers' strike began almost two months ago. NBC's Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel ... return tonight, and Comedy Central's Jon Stewart-hosted The Daily Show will return on Jan. 7, but all will air without their writers on board. Since the Letterman-owned Worldwide Pants owns Late Show and The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson (which also returns tonight), it was able to secure a unique interim agreement with the WGA that allows writers to work on the shows during the strike.

Ever the professional, Letterman threw himself wholeheartedly into the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS. There were subtle changes. Gone were the plaid jackets in favor of conservative, double-breasted suits, and some of the wackier bits were jettisoned. But mostly it was the same Letterman, and for two years the Late Show was consistently trouncing Leno's Tonight Show in the ratings. Eventually, though, the program's Achilles heel - its base in New York - began to wear it down. In many ways the Late Show's energy seemed to emanate from its New York home in the Ed Sullivan Theater, but New York was ... a long flight from Los Angeles, where a majority of the big-name celebrities live.

In 1993 Letterman departed NBC to host his own show opposite Tonight on CBS at eleven-thirty, The Late Show with David Letterman. Three years later, HBO produced a made-for-television movie called The Late Shift, based on a book by New York Times reporter Bill Carter, chronicling the battle between Letterman and Jay Leno for the coveted Tonight Show hosting spot. Letterman would mock the film for months afterwards, specifically on how the actor playing him, John Michael Higgins, did not resemble him in the least. ("They took a guy who looked nothing like me and with make-up and special camera angles, turned him into a guy who looked nothing like me, with red hair.") Carson later made a few cameo appearances as a guest on Dave's show. Carson's final television appearance came on a Late Show episode taped in Los Angeles, when he made a surprise appearance during a 'Top 10 list' segment. The audience went wild as Letterman stood up and proudly invited Carson to sit at his desk.
