A top 10 list could easily be filled with reasons why David Letterman has ruled late night television for 25 years. To name a few - Stupid Pet Tricks, viewer mail, nine Emmy awards and dropping objects off buildings. None of it would be possible without Letterman’s distinct blend of sarcasm and unpredictable humor. Letterman began his career as a news anchor and weatherman for an Indianapolis television station. Sitcom writing and stand-up brought him to Los Angeles, and in 1982, he began hosting NBC’s “Late Night with David Letterman.” Heavily influenced by Johnny Carson, Letterman launched a new show when his mentor retired, and CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” premiered in 1993. The show has produced many notable moments in its run, including Letterman’s quintuple bypass in 2000 and his interview with Dan Rather following the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Late Night With David Letterman premiered on February 1982 on NBC, where it followed the famed Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson. Letterman's show became a huge hit with college students and night owls, famous for its offbeat humor and nightly "Top Ten" lists. Letterman made no secret of his wish to host the Tonight Show once Carson retired; when NBC gave that job to Jay Leno in 1992, Letterman jumped to CBS and began the competing The Late Show with David Letterman. In January of 2000 Letterman missed five weeks of shows after undergoing quintuple bypass heart surgery.

NBC kept Letterman under contract to try him in a different time slot, after which Late Night with David Letterman debuted in 1982. Letterman's show, which ran weeknights at 12:30 a.m. eastern time, immediately following The Tonight Show, quickly established a reputation as being edgy and unpredictable, and soon developed a cult following (particularly among college students). Letterman's reputation as an acerbic interviewer was borne out of moments such as his verbal sparring matches with Cher and Shirley MacLaine.
