David Geffen: Hillary Clinton
built 214 days ago
Geffen has developed a reputation as a prominent philanthropist for his publicized support of medical research, AIDS organizations, the arts and theatre. He was an early financial supporter of President Bill Clinton. In 2001 he had a falling out with the former President over Clinton's decision to not pardon Leonard Peltier, on whose behalf he had lobbied the President.[2]
Leonard Peltier's 1977 murder conviction became a cause celebre for many, including key Democratic supporter and media mogul David Geffen. President Bill Clinton's decision not to pardon Peltier in 2000 cost Hillary Clinton an ally in Geffen and helped gain Barack Obama a friend.(AP Photo )

When President Clinton proposed ending the ban on homosexuals in the military, he turned to Geffen for feedback. With military officials opposing the idea on the grounds that it would be bad for morale, Geffen became a torch carrier for the president's proposal. But after a month spent trying to turn public opinion in favor of the plan, Clinton was forced to adopt a "don't ask, don't tell" compromise. Geffen, for his part, backed away from the issue, saying that overturning the ban would not be worth committing political suicide.

Geffen, who is supporting Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for president... said: "Marc Rich getting pardoned? . . . Yet another time when the Clintons were unwilling to stand for the things that they genuinely believe in.”
For the Clinton team, the Geffen remarks offered a chance to bait a trap. If they could goad Obama's campaign into firing back, they could show that his soaring talk is just talk.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs flatly refused Wolfson's request to denounce Geffen's comments and referred to a remark made earlier this week by South Carolina Democratic state Sen. Robert Ford. Ford predicted Obama would not win the presidency if nominated because he is black. Obama and Ford are both black and Ford has endorsed Clinton.
