Morris and Duffield established PeopleSoft to develop business software exclusively for client-server environments. At the time, this was a somewhat progressive approach because mainframe computer applications were more commonplace. Many enterprises were faced with the challenge of moving from one environment to the other, and PeopleSoft's products found a niche. The company unveiled PeopleSoft Human Resources Management Systems in 1988. Over time, the company's dominance in this business segment would grow until it attained market share of 50 percent.

Duffield is not the only tech leader trying to bail out the company he founded. Tom Siebel stepped down as CEO of software maker Siebel Systems earlier this year after a difficult restructuring. Ted Waitt, CEO of PC maker Gateway, came out of retirement to save his company in 2001, then presided over its acquisition of eMachines. Both men remain chairman.

Duffield is drawing from old colleagues at PeopleSoft to assemble the company's new management team. These include Aneel Bhusri, co-founder of the new company, and previously a PeopleSoft director. He is ... a general partner at VC-firm Greylock Partners which might come in handy later on. Also joining Duffield are Stan Swete, who was PeopleSoft's head of products and technology and John Malatesta, who was PeopleSoft's principal systems architect.
