David Blaine is an American illusionist and stunt performer. He made his name as a performer of street and close-up magic. Blaine began his career by bringing street magic to the public, performing card tricks and illusions such as levitation or bringing dead flies back to life. He used a small camera crew to record his act live in front of everyday people providing the basis for his television specials, "David Blaine: Street Magic, David Blaine: Magic Man", and "David Blaine: Mystifier". His first television special, "David Blaine: Street Magic" influenced the way magic is performed and portrayed on television. With its strong focus on spectators' reactions and showmanship, Blaine entertained unsuspecting pedestrians without the use of the typical magic props used by other magicians.

David Blaine seems to have become quite the staple at functions of the rich and famous lately and last weekend was no exception. The Brooklyn magician performed some walk-around magic at the wedding of Raphael De Niro in the Bahamas according to the New York Daily News.

On Thursday, November 23, 2006, magician David Blaine successfully completed his stunt. This time, Blaine did not do this for publicity sake but for a very good cause. The magician successfully pulled off Target’s challenge – escaping from a gyroscope five stories above Times Square, freeing his shackled hands and feet, jumping 50 feet and crashing into a wooden rostrum below him. The challenge was to help co-host a charity event with the Salvation Army to provide100 children with shopping spree the day after Thanksgiving. That is, if he completed the stunt. Blaine spent sixty-one hours suspended in the air not only in restraints but had to strategically fight dizziness, fatigue and possible hypothermia.

David Blaine was born on April 4, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York. He is of Puerto Rican and Jewish decent and grew up in New Jersey, attending Passaic Valley High School in Little Falls. Blaine first became interested in magic at age 4 after he saw a street magician perform card tricks. David’s mother Patrice White strongly encouraged his new interest.
