Dave Thomas is one of the most unlikely and recognized pitchmen in America. But his self-deprecating commercials were vital in the turnaround of Wendy's, the hamburger chain he named after his youngest daughter. From his first restaurant job to his time as Colonel Sander's right-hand-man to TV star, BIOGRAPHY® tells Thomas' story. See how the rapid growth of Wendy's almost sank the franchise, and hear from family members what Dave is like away from the boardrooms and TV cameras.

Dave Thomas - The founder of Wendy's, the successful chain of fast-food restaurants begun in 1969. Dave named the stores after his 8-year-old daughter Wendy, so the restaurant would sound like a family business. Thomas funded his franchise operation with the money earned from selling four KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) restaurants in 1968. He learned the fast-food business from one of the best, Harland "Colonel" Sanders, the founder of KFC. In 1997 Dave Thomas presided over the grand opening of the 5,000th Wendy's restaurant in Pickerington, Ohio, near Columbus. Dave Thomas was born on July 2, 1932 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Dave Thomas (1932- 2002) founded Wendy's in Columbus, Ohio in 1968, naming it after his daughter's nickname. He expected to have maybe three or four restaurants as places for his children to work. But in time the chain grew to be the world's third largest restaurant empire with over 6,000 restaurants. Central to this success was Dave's gentleness - his consideration and personal concern for others. He was a mentor to many hundreds of people he personally helped, and thousands who were inspired by his leadership. He was loved throughout the Wendy's family.
Dave Thomas was born July 2, 1932 to a poor mother in Atlantic City, NJ. He was put up for adoption and was adopted by Rex and Auleva Thomas. Auleva died when Dave was only 5 so he was forced to travel with his father in search of work. When he was 12 he began working at the Hobby House Restaurant and dropped out of school. His family moved away, so he was on his own. He moved into the YMCA and worked full-time.
