According to Warner Bros, Darren Aronofsky is the next Stanley Kubrick. It may be hard to believe that any filmmaker can be compared to what many consider the greatest filmmaker of all time. But Aronofsky’s new movie The Fountain starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz may very well prove Warner Bros claim correct. The Fountain combines elements of Braveheart, a love story and 2001: A Space Odyssey into one film where a man discovers the fountain of youth and all throughout history he tries to save the life of the woman he loves.
Darren Aronofsky Darren Aronofsky may have his faults as a filmmaker, but lack of ambition has never been one of them, and his striking vision has turned heads from the start. His feature debut, 1998's Pi, and its follow-up, 2000's Requiem For A Dream, were both overwhelmingly intense, quirky, unusually textured films that earned mixed critical responses but resonated well with audiences; his latest project, The Fountain, is an epic-scaled but surprisingly personal film, in which Hugh Jackman and Aronofsky's wife Rachel Weisz interact in three parallel stories, set respectively in the past, present, and future. Made entirely without computer-generated images, it's nonetheless a visually dense wonderland and a psychedelic experience. Aronofsky recently sat down with The A.V. Club in Chicago to discuss reaction to the film, how it was made, and how he narrowly escaped making a horror movie set on a submarine.

Darren Aronofsky There’s simply no denying that Darren Aronofsky has earned his place as one the hottest young filmmakers in Hollywood. Though his movies aren’t for everyone -- the harrowing visuals and gut-wrenching authenticity in Requiem for a Dream turned off certain viewers -- Darren’s unique ability to tap into experiences and emotions that most folks can relate to have ensured that his movies contain a distinctly timeless vibe.

Requiem For A Dream: The Anti-Drug Comedy With A Heart of Gold: Darren Aronofsky made this film after "Al's Drug Stand" started taking away his customers. This film is about when four different people--an astronaut, a drug dealer, a stripper, and a George W. Bush--go to "Al's Drug Stand" and take different drugs and get murdered in bizarre non-drug-related ways. After this movie became the #1 highest-grossing film of all time, "Al's Drug Stand" went out of business.
Darren Aronofsky stunned audiences with his adventurous debut film pi - which Time Out said was 'smart enough to blow your mind, with or without drugs'. His new film is a science-fiction tale that astonishes with the boldness of its ideas, and gatecrashes the senses in its execution.
