Until then, Aronofsky’s graphic novel of the same name, beautifully painted by Kent Williams, is available through Vertigo comics. Aronofsky’s response to the movies countless production troubles was to adapt the screenplay, as it was at that time, into a graphic novel until production could start again. The result is both interesting as a view of how the movie could have been, and beautiful as a story in its own right. Certainly, with Aronofsky’s Kubrick-esque camera techniques, skill with actors, and writing skills, it is no leap in logic to assume that the movie will be even better, another gem to add to Aronofsky’s budding career.
Aronofsky cultists have rallied around the movie—one IMDB user review called it "the best movie of the 21st century." And some critics agree. On Rotten Tomatoes, a Web site that compiles film reviews, The Fountain, as of this morning, had a rating of precisely 50 percent. The Houston Chronicle's critic called it a "sublime metaphysical head trip" and a "transcendent work of art," while the Hollywood Reporter labeled it a "flatulent dissertation" that raised no question deeper than, "Zardoz, anyone?"

A Scanner Darkly (Widescreen Edition) Aronofsky has made a story that is pure art, exquisite in theme, and while you might have to watch "Fountain" a few times to really "get it," but you won't regret the experience. Even if you don't like it, in an era of bland popcorn movies, its ambition is worth praising.
