Screenshot from Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge The original incarnation of Darkstalkers - The Night Warriors was a 1994 arcade game (2D, one-on-one fighting with a horror theme) by Capcom. It was followed by arcade sequels (theoretically even continuing the plot) in 1995 and 1997, as well as two sort-of-remakes released in 1997. In addition to a number of arcade adaptations released for home systems, there was a Darkstalkers 3 released for the Playstation and a 2005 PSP game.

Every Darkstalkers character is on offer in the PSP port. The original Darkstalkers Chronicle was a compilation that included every character from every version of the ten year old franchise. Backgrounds, music and fighters from Vampire, Vampire Hunter, Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Saviour were included, making for an impressive package. All this is featured in the PSP version of the game, along with an all-new Tower mode, a Chronicle mode where you can listen to music, see artwork and watch movies, and Wi-Fi multiplayer support.
Darkstalkers has a much faster pace than your average Street Fighter game, and the characters are much stranger and wackier. This is where it gets its quirky appeal, though fans of more conventional fare might be turned off a bit by the relative lack of more "normal" fighter archetypes. The game ... has a large reliance on canned chain combos (rapid strings of attacks), which rubs some people the wrong way. Take this in stride, though, and you'll find the fighting action to be quite enjoyable and just as solid as that of any Capcom fighter.

Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Towerscreenshot Though the one-on-one fighting mechanics are at the heart of all the modes in Darkstalkers Chronicle, the game boasts an impressive amount of variety in terms of character selection and modes of play. Probably the most significant of these options is the choice between original arcade-style controls and an "easy" control scheme better suited to beginners or those otherwise unable to work around the PSP's inability to perfectly mimic an arcade cabinet setup. The normal controls require you to input moves using the same quarter-circle and multibutton patterns that work in the arcades. The easy controls simplify things down to taps on the D pad, along with simultaneous button presses. Since the gameplay moves quickly, even if you don't pick one of the "turbo" speed settings, the "easy" control scheme turns out to be a welcomed inclusion. So even if you're well acquainted with this style of gaming, you might just gravitate toward the simplified controls.
Darkstalkers Chronicle offers several distinct modes of play including Arcade, Tower, Practice and Network modes. Players can refine their skills in the practice mode, which allows you to perform moves against an opponent adjusting a variety of parameters. The arcade mode offers exactly what you'd expect with one on one battles against foes until you reach the end boss. This is fun and quite easy to get into, but offers a slightly limited replay value. Darkstalkers' most interesting gameplay comes in the extended play of its Tower mode, where you can unlock extras as you battle against foes. In this mode, you select a team of three different characters to battle it out against a series of foes.
