The real beauty of the epic Darklands is the multitude of choices presented to the game player which surpass the complexity and historical accuracy seen in any contemporary computer game. The true role-playing enthusiast will be dazzled by the sheer volume of choices and historically accurate situations which abound in this game. Even after the central plot and many subplots have been exploreed, the quest can continue indefinitely.

In Darklands it’s very easy to get yourself killed so you should save often. And here comes the main bug: you can only save while staying at a city inn, while camping in the countryside or while travelling on the German map. In other situations "save" will ... be allowed, but then your game status could be a mixture of present and past situations. The game will still be completely playable, however.

While never a large commercial success, Darklands' gameplay won it acclaim from role-playing game fans of the time. While the majority of the game uses text-based menus—enhanced with hand-painted illustrations—describing the player party's available actions, the party's movement between cities and during battle utilized a graphical user interface.

When Darklands was released in 1992, it was a cut above the usual fare found in the fantasy role-playing genre. It was ambitious in scope and teeming with detailed role-playing goodies and yet broke the mold somewhat from earlier efforts by (gasp!) not including any lengthy dungeon crawls and focusing on religion and alchemy instead of spell casting. One of the most endearing features of the game is it's unabashed and heavily developed sense of history, borrowing liberally from fact and legend surrounding 15th century Germany, giving Darklands a solid basis of realism not usually apparent. In fact, along that theme, the characters' main quest or goal is to remain alive and grow older, more famous and richer.

Rumors of sequels to the original Darklands were common in the years following its release. These rumors were spurred by the manual itself which says the designers were planning a number of sequels to expand the game into new regions, including other areas of Europe, Russia and other locations. These projects never materialized. Fans frequently called upon Spectrum Holobyte/MicroProse to release the source code to the Darklands community when it became clear there were no further plans for the software, but these requests were not granted.
