Any good RPG lets you obtain new weapons to use against harder monsters, and Dark Cloud 2 is no exception, but the way you do so here is fairly unique. As you kill monsters, the experience you gain doesn't go straight to your characters; you level Max and Monica up with items you find in the future. Rather, the experience goes into your weapons, which have a full range of stats and attributes to manage. Each time a weapon's level increases, its stats go up slightly, and it gains a few more synthesis points. With these you can "spectrumize" any item you're carrying and apply it to the weapon. Spectrumized items increase a particular stat of the weapon you apply it to, and when that weapon reaches the required levels in certain categories, you can rebuild it into an entirely new weapon.

Dark Cloud is an action-RPG title, often compared to Soul Blazer, played from the 3rd person perspective. Toan must enter randomly generated dungeons where he will battle monsters and recover Ada spheres. Toan battles with a sword, which can be slashed directly in front of him or powered up for a stronger blow. During his travels, Toan encounters other characters who will offer to aid him and can be switched to during dungeons, with individual statistics and weapons. Items are ... found and shared among the party, including restorative items, attack items and general power-ups. Each character has a thirst meter, which much be replenished or health will start to drain.

As with all Role Playing adventures the main characters in Dark Cloud can have their abilities (life, defense, water) enhanced as you progress through the game. Where this differs from the norm, is that by far the most important items to increase in strength are not the people, but the weapons; as their strength (or level) determines how quickly enemies are defeated. Several types even have magical abilities that can inflict huge amounts of damage on your foes. Attaching items to a weapon increases its power and the more fights you have with it, the greater the experience (skill) level grows. Once the weapon reaches level five or higher a status break can occur. If a weapon is status broken sixty percent of all the attributes are sealed inside of whats called a synth-sphere.

As with any RPG, Dark Cloud 2 has players exploring monster-ridden dungeons and lands. Gamers can play as one of two intriguing characters: Max or Monica, who each have their own multiple attacks forms, special abilities and weaponry. The superb fight system offers solid options for blocking, dodging, and executing short and long-range attacks and players can gather hundreds of items that include weapons, magic items, treasure, and vehicles. The game features an interesting upgrade system that lets players apply items to a weapon to increase its power.

Dark Cloud puts you in the shoes of a young man named Toan. When Toan's town is attacked by an evil general and a dark genie, it's up to him to do what's right and win back his town. After the genie caused destruction to the town, Toan awakens to find the Fairy King standing in before him. Just before all the buildings were destroyed and people were killed, the Fairy King scurried across the land and trapped everything in a ball known as a "Atla". The Fairy King tells you of the genie's destruction and devises a plan. You are chosen to help find the scattered Atla around the land in an effort to restore all the towns back to original state.

Dark Cloud ... includes a "Georama" mode, in which players design and develop towns and villages in the game world. It seems that several good villagers have been captured and locked away in magical containers, hidden deep in the darkest dungeons and caves. When Toan finds one of these treasures he may open it to free the villagers inside. He also will free the houses and other buildings that were captured and may decide where to place these items. Toan will also decide where to place rivers and trees as he rebuilds a village. By freeing the captured villagers and helping them to build new towns, Toan moves closer to finding the terrible evil that enslaved the good people in the first place.
