In 1987, the sequel Beyond Dark Castle was released, in which Duncan has to return and defeat the Black Knight who is still alive. To access the Black Knight's tower, the player must first gather five magic orbs which are placed in various hard to reach places. Beyond Dark Castle had an engine similar to Dark Castle but with improvements and additions, including some levels where the player could control a "mediaeval jetpack" of sorts. Playing the game on the "Advanced" difficulty level allows the player to see an extended ending cinematic which reveals that the hero Duncan actually puts on the defeated Black Knight's helmet and armor, becoming the new evil ruler himself.

The orbs have to be returned to the Ante Chamber and placed on 5 pedestals for the gate to open so Duncan can face the Black Knight.

In The Dark Castle, you will encounter the ghost castle of Khara-khoto, 250 miles from the oasis of Jiu-chang, near the Qilian Mountains in the Gobi Desert. This legendary lost city was obliterated from the face of the Earth by Genghis Khan, who exterminated the Tangut people who built it. Buried by the Gobi sands, it was unearthed by the Russian explorer Koslov, who took its artworks to the Hermitage. The castle has stood unentered for fifty years, since the locals refuse to enter the cursed grounds. Dark Castle Entertainment was formed in 1999 by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler. The first film to debut was House on Haunted Hill, a remake of the late William Castle movie of the same name. William Castle directed horror films during the 1950s and 60s, including 13 Ghosts, The Tingler, and Macabre.
