Dar Williams was born Dorothy Snowden Williams in Chappaqua, NY. In 1989 she graduated from Wesleyan University, in Middletown, CT where she studied religion and theater. She then moved to Boston where she attempted to get one of her plays produced, but that didn't pan out. It was here that she got interested in folk music and started playing open mic nights. At this time she released 2 cassettes (now unavailable).

Dar Williams kicked off her performance career with a role in her high school's production of Godspell, and as a teenager considered herself a budding playwright. Soon adding songwriting to her repertoire, she began developing her irreverent and bittersweet style while performing sporadically during her college days at Wesleyan University. Moving to Boston upon graduation, she dabbled in theatre and opera at first then struggled to establish herself on the local folk coffeehouse circuit. By 1993, Williams had abandoned the city for the more tranquil atmosphere of Northampton, Massachusetts, and self-released her debut CD, the '60s-influenced Honesty Room, to widespread critical acclaim. Though subsequent releases such as Mortal City (1995), End of the Summer (1997), Cry Cry Cry (1998) and The Green World (2000) sidestepped the mainstream, they generated healthy sales and attracted a dedicated following and sellout audiences at coffeehouses and festivals.

Dar Williams has succeeded in crafting a number of great songs for her fourth album, The Green World, and the album works on a number of levels. The melodies are memorable, the arrangements are evenly balanced, and the lyrics are well written. Williams kicks things off with "Playing to the Firmament," an uplifting song full of jingly guitars and soaring vocals. The lyric playfully invites one to lose oneself, like a child playing games, in order to get beyond the seriousness of everyday life. "After All" is a beautiful, fragile song of self-searching with the wonderful line, "Go ahead/Push your luck/Find out how much love the world can hold." The song builds with quiet intensity, with an organ offering a spare background for Williams' lyrics.
