The Danube in Budapest Along its path, the Danube is a source of drinking water for about ten million people. In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, almost thirty percent (as of 2004) of the water for the area between Stuttgart, Bad Mergentheim, Aalen and Alb-Donau (district) comes from purified water of the Danube. Along the Danube route, at most stopover points, you will have a choice among many or modest and superior hotels. Most require that you eat breakfast and dinner at the hotel. During the author's trip to Vienna, all hotels were accommodating, clean and comfortable. One hotel dinner was "fair", another "very good", and four others, "good". Lunch can be found at many snack bars and small restaurants along or near the bike-route. Be sure to try at least one jausenstation, where a local family, in the country or on a farm, on picnic tables, serves you homemade cold cuts and cheeses on a wooden board.

To mark the anniversary, a new twenty-five kilometre long (15.5-mile) section between Passau and Engelhartszell in Upper Austria is to be inaugurated.
