Danny Elfman: Tim Burton
built 265 days ago
Shortly after Nightmare Before Christmas(1993) was completed, Burton and Danny Elfman had a falling out, and Burton was left to find a new musical collaborator for his next film. Thus the music for his next picture, Ed Wood, was composed by Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings fame most recently). By the time of Burton’s next film, 1996’s Mars Attacks, they seem to have patched things up.

Danny Elfman was crafting a score that matches the Robinson's mix of high-speed hilarity and heart. Elfman, who has created dozens upon dozens of truly distinctive feature film scores - ranging from Batman and Spider-Man to Good Will Hunting and Chicago and, on the animation side, from Nightmare Before Christmas to Charlotte's Web – found that Meet The Robinsons still managed to offer something completely different. He saw the chance to flash back to the kind of kaleidoscopic score one heard back in the days of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, filled with surprising and entertaining shifts in tempo, tone and style, matching the jazzy energy of the Robinsons, while at the same time providing a lush, romantic background to Lewis' transformational journey.

Elfman's first foray into film scoring was in 1980 for his brother's film Forbidden Zone. His first major studio film... was Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. That marked the beginning of a long, productive relationship; Elfman has worked on every one of Burton's films since, with the exception of Ed Wood.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) was a project where Elfman wrote the songs, composed the score, and sang the leading role as Jack Skellington in the movie. Besides Tim Burton, Elfman has worked with many other directors such as Brian DePalma, Emilo Estevez, Warren Beatty (who Elfman says is "insane" to work with), and the Hughes brothers. In 1996, he composed the score to Freeway which was directed by one of his high school friends. In return for his services, Elfman asked to be paid only a dollar.

Since that time, Elfman has scored virtually all of Burton’s films, receiving an Oscar nomination for his score of Big Fish. The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride, feature both composition and vocal performances by Danny Elfman. His gift as a lyricist is ... evident in his wonderful and weird songs for the recent Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
