Danielle Darrieux is Madame de Renal and Gerard Philipe, Julien Sorel in this adaptation of Stendahl's masterpiece Le Rouge et Le Noir. Julien Sorel, handsome, ambitious, but poor, faced with determining the best way to rise from his poverty, chooses the black robes of the church as his means to wealth and power. Passionless and stilted rendition of a truly great novel. Darrieux and Philipe are perfectly cast but Autant-Lara's style is just too ordinary. With: Antonella Lualdi, Antoine Balpetre, Robert Berri, Andre Brunot, George Descrieres, Mikro Ellis, Pierre Jourdan, Jean Martinelli, Jean Mercure, Alexandre Rignault, and Anna Maria Sandri. Notes: Adaptation and dialogue by Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost.

French actress Danielle Darrieux studied the cello at the Paris Conservatory, but the direction her life took was more towards acting than music. Danielle made an impressive film debut as a headstrong teenager in La Bal (1931), but didn't crack the consciousness of international filmmakers until her heartrending portrayal of the doomed Baroness Marie Vetsera in Mayerling (1937). The success of this film led to Danielle's American contract with Universal pictures; studio executive Joe Pasternak cannily concocted what film critic Leonard Maltin has labelled a "winsome" image for the actress in her first US film, The Rage of Paris (1938). Electing to return to France after her American debut, Danielle found herself working under the scrutiny of the new Nazi regime. She made the best of things, continuing to star in films and entertaining the occupation troops as a singer. Unfortunately, this latter activity caused Ms. Darrieux to be labelled a collaborator by the French underground, which at one point targetted the actress for execution.

This is her initial meeting with Jim Trevor (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.) successful business exec who has no clue why the girl is there or who she is. Trevor jests with her and then invites his retinue of secretaries in for future witness if need be. Miss Cortillion is angered and storms out in a huff tittering rapid French. Things don't get any better when she arrives at her small apartment. Her landlady has locked her out for non-payment.

Retirement home resident Odette St. Giles (a radiant Danielle Darrieux) meets Augustin (Jean-Chrétien Sibertin-Blanc) when she comes backstage to congratulate him on the one man show he’s just put on for the oldsters. Long ago, she was the toast of Paris as an operetta entertainer, and their meeting inspires Augustin to attempt to stage a play with Odette to be based on the correspondence of the Marquise du Deffand (an eighteenth-century hostess of artistic salons who was known for her intelligence and esprit). Augustin draws mainstream television star Bettina (Arielle Dombasle), handsome social worker Raphaël (Andy Gillet) and the oddly out-of-place Franck (Christophe Vandevelde) into his frenetic orbit to round out the cast of players.
