What is Dandruff?Dandruff (... known as seborrheic dermatitis) is the excess shedding of the top layer of the skin on the scalp, eyebrows or along the sides of the nose. This top layer of skin consists of dead cells, which protect the more fragile cells below. It is normal for these to be shed or rubbed off because the body is constantly producing new cells that simply move up to replace older ones. However, in dandruff, larger "scales" are shed at an increased rate.

Dandruff (... called [S]curf and historically termed Pityriasis capitis) is due to the excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. As it is normal for skin cells to die and flake off, a small amount of flaking is normal and in fact quite common. Some people, however, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an unusually large amount of flaking, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation. Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos. Dandruff is not an organism like lice; it is just dead skin that accumulates in the scalp. Dandruff is unlikely to be the cause of hair loss.
Dandruff scales generally occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on top of the head. Scaling may form anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can disseminate to the neck and shoulders. Dandruff has been shown to be the consequence of three wanted factors. Skin oil commonly considered to as sebum or sebaceous secretions and the metabolic by-products of skin micro-organisms. Seborrhoeic eczema (or seborrhoeic dermatitis) is a more bitter form of dandruff which can ... affect the skin around your eyebrows, nose, ears, face and forehead. The scales are yellow and greasy miening and your skin is inflamed, red and brusque.
Dandruff is usually seasonal. It is most severe during the winter and mildest during the summer. Dandruff scales usually occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on top of the head. Scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can spread to the neck and shoulders. Dandruff is often known as "dry scalp", but people with oily scalps tend to suffer the most. An oily scalp ... supports the growth of P. ovale.

Dandruff is often associated with dryness of the scalp. There is ... a world of difference between dandruff and flakes of dry skin from ones scalp, but it is no doubt a scalp problem. Medically, dandruff is known as ‘pityriasis’ and is a result of ‘seborrhea’ which is a disorder of the oil secreting glands of the scalp.

Dandruff has been blamed on a multiplicity of causes, including dry skin, oily skin, too much or too little hair washing, diet, stress orhygiene. However, the real cause of dandruff is actually a yeast-like fungus, Malassezia globosa, which lives on the human scalpfeeds on skin oils.
