Dana was born on April 22, 1955 in Missoula, MT. to Bud and Billie Carvey. He was the fourth child in the family, his siblings being Mark, Scott, Lori, and Brad. His family moved to San Carlos, California in 1958, when he was 3. After he graduated from Carlmont High School in 1973, Dana attended San Francisco State University, where he majored in communication arts. While attending there, he won the San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition. After graduation, he played several Bay Area clubs, then moved to LA to pursue a comedy career.
