Dana Carvey: Church Lady
built 626 days ago
Because you never know which voice will come out of his mouth next, a Dana Carvey speaker engagement guarantees a surprising experience for the audience. In fact, a Dana Carvey speaker appearance is like a multiple bill with the Church Lady, Garth Algar and President George H.W. Bush all taking turns on the microphone.
In 1986, Carvey became a household name when he joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live. He, along with newcomers Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Jan Hooks and Victoria Jackson helped to reverse the show's declining popularity and once more made SNL "must-see" TV again. His breakout character was The Church Lady, the uptight, smug, and pious host of "Church Chat." Carvey said he based the character on women he knew from his church growing up, who would keep track of his and others' attendance. He became so associated with the character that later cast members like Chris Farley referred to Carvey simply as "The Lady."

For years ,Dana Carvey entertained America on "Saturday Night Live," creating indelible characters like The Church Lady and Garth from "Wayne's World." He's ... proved himself a master impressionist — who else can do both George Bush and Regis Philbin?? Now that he's touring the country with his hysterical standup show, this is your opportunity to see a comedy legend in action.

Carvey's gallery of comic characterizations is too vast to fully recount here, but his greatest popularity rested on two recurring characters. As The Church Lady (an amalgam of all the well-meaning pious neighbors Carvey had known while growing up), Carvey entered the Catchphrase Lexicon with his oft-repeated Isn't that special? and Could it be....SATAN? And as mop-topped teenage couch potato Garth (again drawn from life--this time based on Dana's brother Brad), Carvey was teamed with Mike Myers in a flawless on-going parody of cheap cable-access television.

Carvey's career in comedy began in San Francisco. His stint on Saturday Night Live gave rise to some of that show's most memorable characters, including Church Lady, Hans of the Austrian body-building team Hans and Franz, and Garth of Wayne's World.

For seven years, Carvey delighted audiences with such characters as the Church Lady and bodybuilder extraordinaire Hans, part of the Hans and Franz duo. He ... excelled at impersonation—taking on such personalities as President George Bush, Ross Perot, and more. In fact, President George Bush liked Carvey’s version of him so much that he invited Carvey to perform at the White House.
