Damn Yankees' second album replicated the sound of their debut, but the songs on Don't Tread were missing the hooks that made the first record a hit. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Damn Yankees is a musical comedy with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop and music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The story is a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C., during a time when the New York Yankees dominated Major League Baseball. The musical is based on Wallop's novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.

Alexander's reconstituted "Damn Yankees" had its shaky but ultimately enjoyable premiere Wednesday at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. His adaptation and direction are a fitting kickoff to the Alexander era at Reprise! Broadway's Best, a worthy if financially troubled company that presents Golden Age musicals in bare-bones productions, often with big names on stage. A few months back, Alexander agreed to run the company for two years without pay. His radical reimagining of "Damn Yankees" represents the kind of things he claims he wants to do with the Reprise: take some risks and attract new audiences.

Damn Yankees” is a lighthearted musical comedy that has lost little of its luster since first opening on Broadway in 1955. Now, half a century later, its prime appeal may well be to people who are nostalgic for the days when the word “damn” was considered risqué and when sports scandals were not everyday events.

The "Faust" legend gets a modern face-lift in this 1958 screen adaptation of the Broadway hit musical, "Damn Yankees." But instead of exchanging one's soul for youth, knowledge, power, wealth, or the hand of a fair young maid, it's for youth and the opportunity of becoming the greatest baseball player of all time. A tempting proposition. And a fun-filled movie.
