The Dallas Mavericks are a relatively young franchise in the National Basketball Association only being in the league since 1981. In 24 seasons the Mavericks have played their way into the postseason tournament on 10 different occasions. The team has only made it to the Western Conference Finals twice. The first time came in 1988, when the team was led by guys like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, Sam Perkins and Roy Tarpley. The team fell to the “Showtime” Lakers, led by Magic Johnson, and went on to beat the Detroit Pistons in seven games in the NBA Finals. The most recent time the team won their way into the Western Conference Finals was in 2003 when the Mavericks finished the regular season as Midwest Division champs with a 60-22 record, their best in franchise history.

The Dallas Mavericks were a couple free throws away from becoming the NBA Champs last year; ... they could not close a few close games. The Mavericks went up 2-0 on the Miami Heat, and let 4 games slip by them, and now the Miami Heat are celebrating as the NBA Champions. During this past off-season, Dirk Nowitzki has been working on revamping his game to become more of a leader, and a better defensive player.

The Dallas Mavericks have acquired Jason Kidd and Malik Allen from the New Jersey Nets for Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George, Maurice Ager, $3 million bucks and first round picks in both 2008 + 2010. The 34-year old Jason Kidd is still one of the best point guards in the NBA and he should fit right in on the Mavericks. Kidd played in 51 games (all starts) this season for the Nets and he averaged 37.2 minutes, 11.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 10.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Kidd hasn’t shot too well this season ... as he’s only hit 36.6% of his shots from the floor, 35.6% from 3-point range and 82% from the free throw line. Kidd has now played in 997 games (984 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 37.4 minutes, 14.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 9.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Forward Malik Allen played in 48 games (12 starts) this season for the Nets and he averaged 15.9 minutes, 5.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.

Dallas Mavericks officials and fans have cited poor officiating and phantom calls as secondary contributors to their loss to the Heat. The most prominent claim concerned the waning seconds of overtime in Game 5, where Wade drew a foul while driving the lane. The claim is that 1) Wade committed a backcourt violation on the inbounds pass by catching the pass before establishing himself in the backcourt, 2) Wade committed an offensive foul on Jason Terry, and 3) the foul call on Nowitzki when Wade drove the lane was erroneous, as there was no contact.

The Dallas Mavericks joined the NBA in 1980-81 and quickly became a competitive franchise. With premium draft selections the team steadily improved through the 1980s-Dallas looked like a team of the future. Then in the early 1990s the Mavericks experienced one of the most precipitous declines in NBA history. The team's descent was so complete that it twice threatened the worst single-season record ever recorded. But with a solid core of young, talented players, the Mavericks should be able to start climbing their way back up the NBA ladder.

The Dallas Mavericks (the Southwest Division of the National Basketball Association) have always been very successful in their Division. The previous season was not an exception. The team finished the season with a stunning .732%, winning in the first round, in the Conference Semifinals, and then in the Conference Finals. Unfortunately, the Mavericks did not manage to beat their fierce opponent and lost to Miami in the NBA Finals.
