Mavs Man, the mascot of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, flies high and prepares to dunk a basketball last Friday at Kemp High School. Mavs Man was on hand at a pep rally marking that night’s games between Kemp and the rival Mabank Panthers.

Devin Harris nailed a jumper with 4.8 seconds left to put Dallas up one, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks dropped a 121-118 home decision to Phoenix in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Harris scored a career-high 30 points on 12-for-17 shooting, while Dirk Nowitzki added 25 points and 19 rebounds. Jerry Stackhouse chipped in 16 for the Mavs, who lost Josh Howard in the first half to a sprained ankle. Dallas hosts Phoenix on Friday (7:30 p.m. on TNT, ESPN Radio 103.3 FM and 1270 AM La Voz del Pueblo).

In 2000-01, the Mavericks improved further and finished with an impressive 53-29 record, fueled by an impressive offensive triangle of Nowitzki, Finley and Nash. The Mavs made a blockbuster trade minutes before the trade deadline that sent Hubert Davis, Christian Laettner, Courtney Alexander, Loy Vaught, and Etan Thomas to the Washington Wizards for Juwan Howard, Calvin Booth and Obinna Ekezie. This move brought in fresh blood that secured the club's first playoff visit in 11 years. Also, Wang Zhizhi became the first Chinese player to play in the NBA, signing with the Mavs in January, along with the Eduardo Nájera, bringing Dallas a decent international cast that included Canada's Nash and Germany's Nowitzki. In the playoffs, the Mavericks won the first round against the Utah Jazz, advancing to the second round for the first time since 1988. Even though they would be eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in five games, it marked a sense of optimism for Dallas in seriously contending for an NBA title.

The Nets and Mavericks moved some parts around and got the big trade done. The Mavericks have acquired Jason Kidd, Malik Allen and Antoine Wright from the Nets for Devin Harris, Maurice Ager, DeSagana Diop, Trenton Hassell, Keith Van Horn, a first round pick in each 2008 and 2010. The Mavericks ... sent $3 million bucks to the Nets. The trade was held up due to Devean George using his no-trade clause and Jerry Stackhouse running his mouth about taking 30 days off before re-signing with the Mavericks. The Mavericks also waived rookie Nick Fazekas to make room on the roster for Keith Van Horn before he was traded to Dallas. Fazekas played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Mavericks this season and he averaged 2.3 minutes, 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds per game.

The Mavericks advanced to their first NBA Finals in franchise history when they defeated the Phoenix Suns in game 6 of the Western Conference Finals on June 3, 2006 in the US Airways Center in Phoenix. They faced the Miami Heat in the finals, held home-court advantage and scored two convincing wins. After game 2 Dallas city officials had already planned the victory parade. However, in Game 3, the Mavs blew a late double-digit lead, courtesy of Heat guard Dwyane Wade, who scored at least 36 points during each of the next four matches. He carried the Heat to the win, with Nowitzki missing a potentially game-tying free throw in the last seconds. After getting blown out in Game 4, the Mavericks suffered another loss in Game 5 when Wade scored the game-tying basket in the last possession of regular time, putting the Heat ahead with last-second free throws in overtime.

Before welcoming the Mavericks in 1980, Dallas had been home to the Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association from 1967-68 to 1972-73. On March 26, 1973, the Chaparrals played the Carolina Cougars in the last ABA game played at Dallas Memorial Auditorium-the paid attendance was 134. The next season the Chaparrals became the San Antonio Spurs, and for the next seven years Dallas was without a professional basketball franchise.
