1. Holocaust Education -- Dalhousie University
   Finding no Holocaust education survey specifically geared to the high school level, these researchers in consultation with Dr. Alan Berger, who holds the Raddock Chair in Holocaust Studies at Florida Atlantic University, created a new survey instrument. This survey was divided into nine parts and asked respondents to answer basic analytic questions about who, what, when, where, how and why regarding Holocaust education. Additionally, it asked respondents to provide information about their personal background and the demographics of their schools. The instrument was validated in the following ways. First, a review of the literature was conducted and a pool of survey items was established. A panel of Holocaust scholars was asked for comments, suggestions, and improvements regarding the survey.
2. Smitty -- Stanford University
   The Summer of Love, Smitty's own Acid Tests, and organizing and protesting the War in Vietnam proved incompatible with graduate studies. After four years at Stanford University, Smitty failed to get a PhD. A broken man, he had to go to work!
3. University of Calgary -- Students
   The University of Calgary has active agreements with over 260 academic international institution and agencies in 50 different countries. These agreements provide opportunities for joint academic and scientific activities, student and faculty exchanges, and collaborative degree programs. The university ... offers a number of Group Study Programs during the regular academic terms and shorter programs in Spring and Summer. Other international opportunities include various field schools and international development project opportunities that allow students to participate in cooperative education, internships, and practicums which combine academic studies with work experience abroad. The university was the first Canadian university to incorporate an international component throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Dr. Fok Ying Tung International House, an international residence for students and visiting scholars, is scheduled to open in 2009.
4. University of Toronto -- Research
   These and other quality-of-life adjustments affect patients as well as their partners and aren't easily resolved in the doctor's office, says Tia Higano, M.D., a University of Washington (UW) prostate-cancer specialist and associate in clinical research at Fred Hutchinson. Higano decided she wanted to do more to help. She found her answer in UW psychologist Sylvie Aubin, Ph.D. Aubin sits in on Higano's patient consults and offers prostate-cancer patients and their partners a "toolbox" of strategies to cope with challenges that are often hard to talk about. They see their patients at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a patient-care partnership of Fred Hutchinson, the UW and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center located on the Fred Hutchinson campus. "Men can live a long time after treatment for prostate cancer, and they deserve to have a good quality of life," said Aubin, an acting instructor in the UW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. "But it's often very hard to get men to open up about these problems, which is the first step.
5. Brian Mulroney -- Nova Scotia
   Mulroney had not been involved in politics at any level prior to entering St. Francis Xavier University in the fall of 1955 as a 16-year-old freshman. That changed when he was recruited to the campus Progressive Conservative group by Lowell Murray and others, early in his first year. Murray would become a close friend, mentor, and adviser who was appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1979. Other important, lasting friendships made there by Mulroney included Gerald Doucet, Fred Doucet, Sam Wakim, and Patrick MacAdam. Mulroney enthusiastically embraced political organization, and assisted the local PC candidate in his successful 1956 Nova Scotia provincial election campaign; the PCs, led provincially by Robert Stanfield, swept to a surprise victory (Mulroney: The Politics of Ambition, by John Sawatsky, 1991).
6. Precambrian -- Earth
   The controversy over the paleontology and stratigraphy of the Hakatai Shale (or any other Precambrian strata) raises a larger question than the mere presence or absence of fossilized plant material in the Precambrian. Rather, the core issue is whether or not young-earth creationists should use the global uniformitarian column to define biblical history. Austin and Wise follow the general framework of the global uniformitarian column (Austin, 1994, p. 58, Figure 4.1; Austin and Wise, 1994, p. 40, Figure 1; Snelling et al., 1996, p. 333, Figure 1). They have ... proposed that the pre-Flood/Flood boundary should occur at the uniformitarian Precambrian/Cambrian boundary (Figure 2). 7. Queen Elizabeth Ii -- Canada
   ELIZABETH II became Queen on 6 February 1952 on the death of her father King George VI. She was proclaimed Queen and "Supreme Liege Lady in and over Canada" at Ottawa the same day.
8. Oceanography -- Marine Research
   The Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University seeks an excellent candidate for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Ocean Prediction. The spatial scales of interest range from basin to global, and the time scales from seasonal to interannual and decadal. A major focus is the incorporation of ecological and biogeochemical processes into coupled, ocean-atmosphere models, developed and evaluated through quantitative comparison of model predictions and observations. 9. Diagnostic Test -- Results
   The FertilMARQ™ Home Diagnostic Screening Test is an easy-to-use at home male fertility test that measures sperm concentration. This new product determines whether sperm concentration is above or below 20 million sperm cells per milliliter (million/mL). Two test results with sperm concentration less than 20 million/mL may indicate male infertility (this concentration value has been recommended by the World Health Organization).
10. War of 1812 -- States
    This is the only large tract of territory held by either side at the conclusion of the war and was given back to the United States by the Treaty of Ghent. The British did not leave Maine until April 1815, at which time they took large sums of money retained from duties in occupied Maine. This money, called the "Castine Fund", was used in the establishment of Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
