By the early 1980s, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was already a star in the NASCAR world, although the sport of stock car racing was still growing. Consequently, Dale Sr. was away for much of his son's childhood and even when he was around, he was preoccupied with racing. Dale Jr. was raised by his stepmother Teresa, and "up until I was 14 or 15, I was real short and I was kind of an Opie," Earnhardt recalls, likening himself to Ron Howard's character on The Andy Griffith Show.

Dale Earnhardt Jr raced in an American Lemans Series Corvette in 2004 at Infineon. In practice, he had this scary crash where he suffered only minor burns. Earnhardt later said he clearly remembers someone pulling him out of the car (he is obviously dazed after the hit), but in the video, you can see nobody is there to do that.
