Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, who has been negotiating the new deal at Dale Earnhardt Inc. with her brother, is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday. Holland Sentinel - A Texas Motor Speedway billboard featuring NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is shown along Highway 360 northbound near Green Oaks Boulevard in Arlington, Texas. TMS president Eddie Gossage said the billboards will be changed after a request from
Dale Jr. during a race. In 2004, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the Daytona 500, six years to the day after his father won his only title in the "Great American Race." On July 18, during on off-weekend from NASCAR, Dale Jr. crashed a Corvette C5-R during a practice for the American Le Mans Series 2004 Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway. The car slid off course after getting spun out by Mike Rockenfeller in the # 23 Alex job car and hit a concrete barrier during warm-up the day of the race, rupturing a fuel line and causing the car to burst into flames with Earnhardt, Jr. still inside. He suffered second and third degree burns on his neck, chin, and legs partially due to not wearing a protective balaclava with his helmet. The burns prevented him from finishing two races where he was replaced by Martin Truex Jr. and his DEI teammate John Andretti in the middle of the races. In the fall, Junior became the first driver to sweep a weekend at Bristol by winning both the Busch race and Cup race in the same weekend.
Proclaimed Dale Earnhardt Day in NC: Gov. Mike Easley proclaimed today as Dale Earnhardt Day in North Carolina to honor the late NASCAR legend. Today would have been Earnhardt’s 53rd birthday. “Dale Earnhardt brought so much joy to fans throughout the world and pride to this great state,” Easley said in a statement issued Wednesday. “He helped elevate NASCAR and the motor sports industry to new heights. As Dale’s legacy continues on, it is appropriate to pay tribute to the life and accomplishments of this outstanding North Carolinian.” Easley signed a state House bill in October 2002 to designate N.C. 136 in Iredell and Cabarrus counties as N.C. 3, the same number as Earnhardt’s racing car. The Dale Earnhardt Highway passes through Mooresville, home of Dale Earnhardt Inc. The highway ... passes through and Kannapolis Earnhardt’s hometown.

The younger Earnhardt was twice champion of the Busch Racing Series, then moved up to the Winston Cup circuit for his first full season on in 2000. He had two Winston Cup victories that year, including his first at the Coca Cola 600 in April. Earnhardt finished second in the 2001 Daytona 500, the race in which his father was killed. Three years later, Earnhardt took the checkered flag to win the 2004 running of the Daytona 500.
