Dale Earnhardt: Bud Moore
built 141 days ago
When Dale Earnhardt joined his friend Neil Bonnett on February 18th of this year, Bonnett met him at the pearly gates. Bonnett had the run of the place but without Dale, he was getting bored. Yes, he occasionally hung out with the likes of J.D. McDuffie, Davey Allison, Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty, Tony Roper and sometimes even with that open wheel guy, Greg Moore, but his old fishing and hunting buddy was here now and Bonnett was content.

Movie script concerns Earnhardt family: As thousands of fans go to Mooresville today to celebrate what would have been Dale Earnhardt's 53rd birthday, an ESPN crew will be in Cabarrus County re-creating scenes from the Intimidator's life. Since mid-April, the TV moviemakers have spent time in the neighborhood where Earnhardt grew up. They've filmed at local tracks. They've held open casting calls in Concord to add local flavor. But as close as ESPN producers say they have gotten to Earnhardt's roots, they don't have approval from the people who were closest to him: his family. Out of concern for inaccuracies in the script, Dale Earnhardt Inc. -- the company run by Earnhardt's widow, Teresa -- hasn't endorsed the film.

Earnhardt kept his personal life relatively private. He enjoyed the company of his family, being outdoors, hunting and fishing, and actively working on his farm in Mooresville. In contrast with his image as a hardnosed competitor on the track, off the track he was known to his friends as someone who was charitable and generous, but usually kept that side of himself hidden from the rest of the world.
