Daikatana: Levels

Daikatana will contain four different episodes set in different time periods and locals: Ancient Greece, Norway during the Dark Ages, modern San Francisco, and Japan in the future. Each of these episodes will be defined by a unique textures, weapons, monsters, and soundtracks. Your character will begin the first level with a basic skills. The character gains experience points and can increase its skill and proficiency over time. Your character will ... have two companions for assistance and guidance.

Even with its nonsensical story and irrelevant RPG trappings, Daikatana could still have emerged as a good shooter if the action parts had turned out well. Unfortunately, the action portions of Daikatana frustrate more often than they entertain due to a combination of inconsistent level design, a poorly realized sidekick feature, and an unforgiving save system.
Daikatana is based upon the Quake2 engine, with additional features like fogging, specular lighting on models, better skies and a few other enhancements. The engine, combined with some great textures and sounds creates some very atmospheric levels.

Similarly snore-inducing is Daikatana's multiplayer deathmatching, which crams those pithy RPG nuggets into a plain-vanilla online beatdown. Yeah, there are some nice features - the maps scale based on the number of players, and "Death Tag" is fun for a few run-throughs, but the levels are pretty weak, and the weapon selection is just as gimpy as the single-player modes.
