GM's investment in the bankrupt South Korean automaker Daewoo three years ago has turned into an Asia-Pacific plum for the struggling automaker. Owing largely to the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact built by Daewoo, GM's Asia-Pacific region posted its first profit in five years during the second quarter of $37 million and reinforced Daewoo's bid to lead in development and production of entry-level GM cars. In a Bloomberg News report (August 31), Daewoo's fast growth as a technical and manufacturing anchor for GM in Asia is summarized. The American team that runs GM Daewoo is led by Nick Reilly, 55, who predicts Daewoo will sell about 1.05 million vehicles worldwide this year and as many as 1.5 million in 2008.

The re-branded Daewoo models sold in Israel succeeded far beyond GM's expectations so the Daewoo re-branding strategy was adopted to other countries as well. In most European countries ... GM retained the Daewoo brand and original model names until December 31, 2004.

In Singapore, Daewoo is replaced by the Chevrolet brand after GM bought Daewoo. It still offers the same line-up from Daewoo, namely the Optra sedan, Optra station wagon and Optra5 hatchback in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The vehicles use the 1.6 L or 1.8 L engine with an automatic transmission available for selected models.
