Cystitis: Women

Uncomplicated cystitis is treated with antibiotics. These include penicillin, ampicillin, and amoxicillin; sulfisoxazole or sulfamethoxazole; trimethoprim; nitrofurantoin; cephalosporins; or fluoroquinolones. (Fluoroquinolones generally are not used in children under 18 years of age.) A 2003 study showed that fluoroquinolone was preferred over amoxicillin... for uncomplicated cystitis in young women. Treatment for women is short-term; most women respond within three days. Men and children do not respond as well to short-term treatment and require seven to 10 days of oral antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs.

Recurrent cystitis is most often caused by a type of bacteria called E. coli, the leading cause of all urinary tract infections. About 25-50% of all young, healthy women who suffer their first infection will develop a second one within 6 months. Although the risk for cystitis increases with age, the incidence of recurrent infections is only about 10-20% for people over 60.

HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) - if you are past the menopause, HRT may reduce recurrent cystitis. This is because HRT contains oestrogen and can reverse some of the changes to the tissues around your vagina caused by the menopause. Topical HRT (oestrogen creams, pessaries, etc) treat just your genital area, and may help. Some women take HRT tablets, patches, or implants for the general effect of HRT. These too may help, but topical HRT may be better in preventing recurrent cystitis

You may think you have a bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI), known as cystitis, but antibiotics haven't helped. Instead you may have interstitial cystitis, or painful bladder syndrome. Interstitial cystitis affects between 700,000 and 1 million Americans. While it can affect children and men, most of those affected are women. The disorder can have a long-lasting adverse impact on your quality of life.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a condition that causes discomfort or pain in the bladder and abdomen. It is far more common in women than in men. The symptoms vary from case to case. Some people have an urgent or frequent need to urinate. Women's symptoms often get worse during their periods. They may ... have pain with sexual intercourse.

Cranberry juice - There is some evidence that cranberry juice may help to prevent cystitis. One study compared women with recurrent cystitis. Some took a daily drink of cranberry juice, and some did not. There were 20% fewer bouts of cystitis in the treatment group over the 12 month study period. (The treated group had a 50ml drink of cranberry-lingonberry juice each day. This contained 7.5mg cranberry concentrate).
